Giudici And Fletcher Advance Again, Remain Undefeated This Fall

FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y./NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Marist men's tennis team continued its fall schedule on Saturday, playing on the second day of both the USTA Invitational, at the site of the U.S. Open, and at the Ivy Plus Tournament. The Red Foxes won a combined 18 matches on Saturday.

USTA Invitational…

For the second consecutive weekend, junior Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) and freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) advanced to their respective singles' flight championships.

In third round action, Giudici cruised past his opponent from Fordham 6-1, 6-2 to advance to Sunday's Draw “E” championship. Similarly, fletcher did not have a problem with his adversary from Youngstown, beating him 6-4, 6-3. Both players, who won their singles' and doubles' flight championships at last weekend's Brown Invitational, are now 6-0 on the season.

Playing in the back draw, Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) defeated his foe from Boston College 6-4, 6-4 in Draw “A”. In Draw “C”, Julien Hochner (Nice, France) beat his opponent from Fairfield 6-4, 6-3 and Jacob Solly (Sydney, Australia) eased past is St. Francis foe 6-2, 6-0.

Both Joseph Motta (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Aviel Malka (Israel) won by default in their respective back draws.

In doubles, Marist went 6-2 in two rounds on the day and all four pairings won their second round match.

In Draw 1, the duo of Solly and Dube beat their opponent from Fordham 8-5 before falling to a pairing from Bucknell in the third round, 8-5.

Giudici and Fletcher used the momentum from their singles' success to beat a duo from Sacred Heart, 8-3, as well as a pairing from Fairleigh Dickinson, 8-4, to win the back draw of Draw 2.

In Draw 3, the duo of Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) and Motta beat a MAAC-opponent pairing 8-2 and won by default in round three.

Hochner and Malka teamed up in Draw 4 for an 8-5 win over a duo from Bucknell, but fell in the back draw final against a pairing from Youngstown, 8-3.

"I was very impressed by the play of both Matteo Giudici and Dylan Fletcher,” Marist assistant coach Jason Sacher said. “Both played consistent, fundamentally sound tennis overall."

Ivy Plus Tournament…

In back draw singles' action, Marist went 3-1 to advance to the back draw finals on Sunday.

Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) beat his adversary from Old Dominion 7-5 (5), 6-1 in Draw “C”.

Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) cruised by opponent from Old Dominion, 6-0, 6-1 in Draw “E” and Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) similarly had no problem in Draw “F”, 6-3, 6-1.

Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) fell in Draw “B” 6-2, 6-3 to his opponent from Binghamton.

In doubles, Rossi and Reznek advanced in the back draw of Draw “A” with an 8-5 victory while Klassen and Nagelstad fell in the main draw of Draw “C”, 8-5 to a pairing from UPenn.

"After two days at the ivy plus at Yale, I am pleased that we won four doubles and six singles matches,” Marist head coach Tim Smith said. “This is one if the top tournaments in the north east and I am proud of the way Nagelstad, Klassen, Reznek and Rossi have competed."

Singes' main draw and back draw championships at both tournaments will take place on Sunday.
