FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y./NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second week in a row, freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) won his singles' flight championship as the Marist men's tennis team wrapped up play at both the USTA Invitational and the Ivy Plus Tournament.
USTA Invitational…
Fletcher, playing in his first collegiate season, improved to 7-0 this fall. He defeated his opponent from Bucknell 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday to win the Draw “C” championship. It is his second singles' flight championship in as many weeks as he also won last weekend at the Brown Invitational.
Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy), Fletcher's doubles' partner the past two weekends, fell in a hard-fought, three-set match in the Draw “E” championship, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
"I am very proud and impressed with the play of both Matteo and Dylan” Marist assistant coach Jason Sacher said. “They both played solid, consistent, mistake-free tennis the whole tournament. I was particularly impressed with the heart and determination they showed in their matches."
Ivy Plus Tournament…
Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) was victorious in the back draw final of Draw “E”, defeating his opponent from Dartmouth 7-5 (5), 6-2.
Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) won a back draw match in Draw “B”, 6-4, 6-2 over his opponent from St. John's. Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) fought back after dropping the first set to come away with a strong, three-set victory, 2-6, 6-0, 10-5, in the Draw “F” back draw.
Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) fell in the back draw final of Draw “C”, 7-5 (5), 6-1 to his adversary from Harvard.
"It was a great way to finish this tournament, winning three singles and beating opponents from Penn, Dartmouth and St. John's," Marist head coach Tim Smith said.
Marist is off next weekend before returning to the court on Thursday, Oct. 3 in the first dual match of the season at Siena.
