NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Marist men's tennis team got off to a nice start this weekend with a 6-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. The match took place on the campus of Yale University as part of the Yale Invitational.
"Good start to the weekend against the team that has won the NEC Conference three times. Felt we competed very well 2 through 6 and in second and third doubles” said head coach Tim Smith said.” “We are excited against the upcoming match against Yale and Stony Brook. "
Senior Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) got the Red Foxes off to a strong start with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jacob Whalley. Marist senior Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) was another winner as he knocked off Gonzalo Quintana, 6-3, 6-4.
Red Fox junior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) got the better of Diogo Garnel in a 6-4, 6-0 decision. Sophomore Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) won a riveting match for Marist in a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory over Arnaud Valentin. Freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) helped the Red Foxes nearly sweep the singles matches as he defeated Julien Philippe, 6-1, 6-2.
On the doubles side of things, FDU won its first match of the day as Quintana and Arvis Berzins defeated Reznek and senior Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland), 8-0. The duo of Klassen and sophomore Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) righted the ship with an 8-2 decision against Whalley and Valentin. In the final match of the day, the Red Foxes' Fletcher and junior Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) defeated Garnell and Philippe, 8-4.
Marist will be back in action tomorrow as they are scheduled to finish matches against Yale and face Stony Brook at 9 a.m.
