NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Coming off a loss to Yale earlier today, the Marist men's tennis team managed to put together a winning weekend as they defeated Stony Brook, 5-1 to notch their second win of the weekend.
"What a great way to finish a very competitive weekend" I was very pleased in particular with our doubles play at third doubles with Matteo Giudici and Dylan Fletcher winning another key match. One of our Norwegian vikings Trym Nagelstad also played a terrific match in helping Dalen Klassen clinch the doubles point” head coach Tim Smith said.
“Giudici really had a better weekend by winning all five matches.. He should be a lock in for this week's MAAC Player of the Week award,” Smith added.
Senior Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) fell to Stony Brook's Alexandre Felisa, 6-2, 6-0 but the Red Foxes wouldn't lose another singles match. Senior Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) got the best of Raphael Termat, 6-4, 6-2. The match involving Marist senior Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) and Stony Brook's Jose Morales was not completed.
Junior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) was another winner for the Red Foxes, defeating Tyler Hoffman, 6-1, 7-6. Sophomore Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) edged the Seawolves' Marcelo Locatelli, 6-2, 7-5. Junior Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) closed out the singles matches on a positive note for Marist with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Albert Fontova.
The Red Foxes won two of the three doubles matches, the duo of Klassen and sophomore Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) defeated Hoffman and Locatelli, 8-4. Giudici and freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) got the best of Termat and Vinicius Degani, 8-6. Rossi and Reznek were on the wrong end of an 8-5 decision in the other doubles match, falling to Felisa and Morales.
Following the weekend, Marist will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to St. Peter's to face the Peacocks in a MAAC contest at 3:30 p.m.
