QUEENS, N.Y. - The Marist men's tennis team fell to 74th ranked St. John's on Thursday afternoon, 7-0. Despite the sweep, several of the doubles and singles matches were very close, including two singles matches going into tie-breakers and third sets.
"I really liked the way we competed at all three doubles matches, especially one and two," said head coach Tim Smith. "We have 4 losses this year, but they all are against teams that have been ranked in the top 75 in the ITAs. The fact that different guys showed up today helps show that our team is competitive throughout our line up. Big match against Niagara on saturday will give me a better idea how much our team has grown. Reznek fought like a blood hound after a wounded prisoner."
Senior Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) brought his number one singles match to three sets but eventually fell to R.J. Del Nunzio, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Senior Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Erick Reyes. Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) also carried his match to three sets, including two tie-breakers, but dropped the tight match to Lucas Hejal 6-7 (4), 7-6 (1), and 10-7.
Junior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) was edged by Vaidik Munshaw 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) was topped by Freddy Ruiz Acevedo 6-3, 6-1. Junior Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy,) was bested in two sets by Michael-John Every, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action, St. John's claimed all three matches. The Marist duo of Rossi and Reznek fell to Hejal and Munshaw, 8-6. Klassen and sophomore Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) match against Delnunzio and Reyes did not finish. The pair of Giudici and freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) dropped a 8-3 decision to Robert Livi and Every, 8-3.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, Mar. 22 when they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for Niargara. The matches are set to begin at 9:30 p.m. at Cross Court in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
