November 17, 2020 – Seven years ago today, the Marist volleyball team won a share of its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season championship in program when the Red Foxes defeated Rider by a score of 3-2 at McCann Arena. Marist erased a 2-0 deficit, as the Red Foxes roared back to win the final three sets.
The day was also historic for junior libero Brooke Zywick, who set the program's record for digs in a season in the match.
The following week, Zywick would go on to be one of three major award winners for the Red Foxes. She was named Libero of the Year, Mackenzie Stephens was honored as Player of the Year, and
Tom Hanna was named Coach of the Year.
The Red Foxes reached the final of the MAAC Championship in 2013. The following season, Marist won the MAAC regular-season title outright for the first time, and set a program record with 25 wins.
Below is the game story from that day:
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team posted a clutch 3-2 victory (21-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-22, 15-4) over Rider today, as the Red Foxes share a piece of the Metro Atlantic Athletic (MAAC) season championship.
In their final home match of the season, Marist celebrated seniors
Gabriella Lutjen (Smithtown, N.Y.),
Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.), and
Grace Hill (Kalamazoo, Mich.) while the Red Foxes had three players claim new records on the day.
At the start of the first set, junior
Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) broke the Marist record for the most digs in a single season. Zywick entered today's match tied with 480, set by Emily Brosky in 2009. In the fourth match, Zywick posted her 20th dig for the day, to claim her 500th season dig. With 31 for the match, she now has 511 digs this season.
Also for the Red Foxes, senior
Audra Brady claimed her third program record for assists, posting 65 for the day, and tying third for the program. This is the most ever for Brady in a match. Brady previously posted 60 assists in a single game. Junior
Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) posted 26 kills to become the fifth all-time for Marist in single match kills.
Freshman
Liz Gassman (Glenside, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with a .600 attack percentage, going 6-0-10. Also for Marist, sophomore
Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) posted 19 kills, while freshman
Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had four service aces for the outing.
The first match saw eight tie scores, with seven of those being in the first half of the set. The Broncs captured the lead on a service error, before going on a two-point run to put the set at 19-17. The Red Foxes would come within three before Rider claimed the first set 25-21.
Despite posting 11 tie scores throughout the second set, the Red Foxes were unable to claim a lead. Down by four points at the end of the set, Marist went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 21-all, in which Marist would battle back to tie the set three more times. With Marist down by one, sophomore
Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Co.) added a kill to keep the Red Foxes in the set before the Broncs claimed the second set off of a kill and a service ace.
Marist answered back in the third set, posting its first lead since the first set with a 2-0 run. With a kill from Lahey and a key team block, the Red Foxes posted a two-point run to maintain a 9-7 lead over Rider. The Broncs attempted to battle back, tying the match four more times halfway through the set. After a controversial call Marist went on to claim a 20-17 lead. Marist then posted a key block to lead by four. The Red Foxes were on 5-0 run before Rider claimed two points, which was the most Marist would allow before the end of the set. The Red Foxes came up with a big win to claim the third set off of two kills by Stephens.
The Red Foxes set the tone for the fourth set, claiming the first two points. After eight tie scores in the first half of the set, Rider reclaimed the lead on a two-point run (16-14). The Red Foxes battled back after being down by three to post a three-point run to tie the set at 18-all. Marist reclaimed the lead at 20-19 on a service ace from Millington. They went on to post a 4-1 run before finishing the set with an attack by Lahey followed by a key block from Gassman and Brady.
Marist started off the fifth set by jumping out to an 8-1 lead. The Red Foxes continued to go on a seven-point run to boast an 11-point lead over Rider to win the fifth set 15-4.
The Red Foxes enter the MAAC Championships as the No. 2 seed next weekend as they take on third-seeded Iona on Saturday. The match time is to be announced.
