POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The 2016 Marist softball set a program record with 45 wins, broke numerous school records, made news on the national stage, and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the third time in program history.
Â
One of the best illustrations of the excellence of this team took place from late March through early May. On March 22, the Red Foxes swept a doubleheader at Bethune Cookman, which started a 10-game winning streak. Although this streak was snapped with an extra-inning loss in the first game of a doubleheader against Manhattan on April 10, Marist prevailed in the second game … and the next 16 after that through May 4.
Â
In all, this dominant stretch saw the Red Foxes win 27 games out of 28. During this time, the following all occurred in a five-game span in mid-April:
Â
- April 13: Colleen McWilliams homered in all three of her at-bats, and Brooke Peterson came two outs away from a perfect game in a 10-0 triumph over Hartford.
- April 16: In the first game of a doubleheader against Saint Peter's, the Red Foxes stole nine bases in an 8-0 triumph.
- April 16: In game two against Saint Peter's, Marist belted nine home runs and pounded out 18 hits in a 22-1 triumph.
- April 17: Jayne Oberdorf tossed a no-hitter in an 8-0 shutout of Quinnipiac.
Â
With a 16-4 mark in conference play, the Red Foxes cruised to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title. The team garnered four major MAAC awards, as
Jayne Oberdorf was named Pitcher of the Year,
Claire Oberdorf was honored as Rookie of the Year, Kyrsten Van Natta was named Defensive Player of the Year, and
Joe Ausanio took home Coach of the Year.
Â
The Oberdorf sisters, Van Natta, and Maureen Duddy were all named First Team All-MAAC. McWilliams,
Janna Korak,
Gabrielle Kelliher, and
Jessica Van Alphen were named Second Team All-MAAC.
Â
In the conference tournament,
Jayne Oberdorf shut out Fairfield and Quinnipiac to get the Red Foxes to the championship game against Monmouth. With the score at two apiece in the bottom of the seventh,
Brittany Colombo's infield single scored Korak from second and gave the Red Foxes their third conference championship.
Â
The 2016 season saw Marist softball set 12 team records, six career records, and four single-season records. Duddy broke the MAAC's career mark for stolen bases. Nationally, Marist ranked in the top 50 in eight categories as a team, and individually seven Red Foxes appeared in the nation's top 100.
Claire Oberdorf's sensational freshman season, which saw her hit a team-leading .376 with seven homers, 39 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases, saw her named to the NFCA Top 10 Freshman list nationally.
